Modeling and experiments to better understand rural livelihoods decision-making
Agro-pastoralism
How do agriculture and pastoralism share space under shifts in climate and development?
We first worked in this domain with GreenReserve, a game that started with a conversation about insurance in Ethiopia, and that grew over the quiet period during the pandemic to be a game about shared reserves and dry forage that better fit the Borana context our IFPRI partners had been working in. We piloted GreenReserve just after travel opened up again following the pandemic, and just before the grant funding ran out.
We also developed a simple teaching model using agropastoralism as a starting point to show how different practices share space and provide co-benefits alongside challenges.
Future work might do better to link these two pieces in a games-ABM coupled product, helping communicate challenges faced by agropastoralists to a landscape planner crowd.
